Brief tour of Hersonissos

Hersonissos many years ago was a small port, serving the needs of the local fishermen only. Over the years the port grew and the village became a small town, which lives mainly on tourism.

On the west side of the coastal road there is the Sarantaris Cape with the picturesque church of Agios Georgios. From there start the continuous ports of Hersonissos with their beautiful beaches. There are several hotels, cafes and restaurants along the bay.

East of the harbors there is the Kastri hill, west of which the main town begins.

On the hill are found ruins of an early Christian basilica with several mosaic floors. To the east, there is the picturesque Church of Agia Paraskevi, a piece of which is built into the rock. The Church overlooks the entire port of Hersonissos with its beautiful lighthouse, which is right next door.

Boats leave the port for excursions to Dia and the surrounding areas.

At the port starts the seaside street of the city with many shops and Hersonissos beach below. Here you’ll see thousands of tourists flocking in the evenings.

If you leave the beach and go a little further, you will find many narrow streets with shops, and after a while you will find yourself on the main street of Hersonissos. If you head east along the coastline, you’ll find the bustling beaches of the Eastern Peninsula and the big hotels in the area.

As you move further east, the buildings dilute and the beaches become calmer.
